All of us have seen big white rolls of silage bales wrapped in plastic on the fields in the countryside - food for cattle, horses and sheep.

During bale silaging process, high moisture green feed or hay bales are wrapped into airtight plastic enclosures. This way, the feed is preserved through fermentation, with minimal nutrient and harvest loss.

There is no joint collection of used plastic wrapping on Åland, so the waste

is usually shipped to Sweden for recycling. The challenge is to find a way to reuse and handle the plastic waste locally, minimizing the environmental and economic negative effects.
